What is therapy?

Therapy in the context of a psychological consultation is basically an ongoing confidential conversation that gets to the heart of who you are and what you are currently struggling with. It is not technique driven, but a collaborative process, the aim is to assist you to meet your personal goals. It is informed by evidence based psychological therapies. Sometimes it will include coaching, psycho education, skills training and counselling. These sound like they are all the same thing, but there are some subtle nuances. What is a Mental Health or Clinical Social Worker?

Accredited Mental Health Social Workers are registered providers with Medicare Australia. They have been assessed  on behalf of the Commonwealth Government by the AASW as having specialist mental health expertise.

Like other health professionals, such as psychologists, Accredited Mental Health Social Workers use a range of interventions in helping people , including the following focused psychological strategies:

  • Family Systems Therapy
  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy
  • Relaxation strategies
  • Trauma therapies
  • Skills training
  • Problem solving
  • Parenting coaching
  • Narrative Therapy
  • Anger  and stress management
  • Psycho-education (including Motivational Interviewing)
  • Dialectical Behaviour Therapy
  • Neuroscience

Whilst I frequently use these therapies as appropriate, I am  guided by Bowen Family Systems theory and practice as the underpinning approach. Children are seen only if a parent attends appointments and is willing to engage in the therapy process.

Referrals

Anyone can refer, including the person seeking therapy. However, in order to receive a Medicare rebate, a GP needs to provide a Mental Health Care Plan under the Better Access To Mental Health Care scheme.
